With their bright red paint, shiny chrome trim and gold leaf
lettering, the old fire trucks will again take over Horseshoe
Lake Park on September 10th, providing visitors the opportunity
to go back in time and experience firefighting from days gone
by. There will be fire engines dating as far back as the late
1800’s on up to modern day apparatus, including a fully
operational 1899 steam pumper. While some of the old engines are
owned by local fire departments, most are restored and
maintained by private parties. Visitors will be able to look at
the old equipment and talk to the owners, learning the history
of each piece and in some cases the story of their rescue and
restoration.
In addition to the old fire engines, this year’s event
will include a community safety fair with display’s and
demonstrations from various Cowlitz County agencies, including
the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s search and rescue and dive teams,
Department of Emergency Management, Safe Kids and the Woodland
Fire Department with their fire safety house.
These
agencies will be able to share information with kids and adults
alike offering tips on keeping them safe and healthy as they go
about their daily lives and also demonstrate their special
skills and tools.
The
event will start at 10 AM and run until approximately 4 PM.
Woodland fire department will be providing water shuttle and
dump tanks that will allow you to pump your engine into the
lake. There will also be prizes for Best in Show, People's
Choice, Longest Distance Traveled and Most Unusual Apparatus.
This is
a great opportunity to show off your fire engine, meet other
apparatus owners and talk with interested visitors about your
rig and the fire service in general. If you have not attended
this event, you don't know what you are missing.
